End of Year Message

Dateline January   1st, 1999

Hi everyone.....Happy New Year......I am in Puerto Rico at the Ponce Hilton Hotel just waking up after a wonderful New Years eve Party hosted by the Hilton and Angelo Santiago, one of Puerto Rico's finest promoters..It was a very classy party with all the decorations in black white and Silver colors in the Grand Ballroom of the Ponce Hilton....Ponce is a wonderful city usually overlooked by the concert promoters...I discovered the new parks near the beach especially their concert stage dedicated to the memory of the great salsa singer Hector Lavoe...There is a hugh parking facility and plenty of beach and food concessions.......The party music started by a dj playing the current Victor Manuel hits and then to my surprise was a very talented merengue band from Ponce called GRUPO LA FIRBRE who played original material and performed with new energy and a great dancing ability with 4 up front singers...I entered the room to see Mambo De Leon, one of Puerto Rico's best baseball players with his wife and family dancing up a storm ...I guess that is why they call him Mambo....Miranda's orchestra set up on the stage and in 10 minutes were swinging ..Johnny Torres is a very fine bassist and I love playing with him as well as the rhythm section in Ismael's band....El niņo bonito de PR was in fine voice, and had brought his whole family to Ponce for the holiday....All were excited as the clock moved stearily towards midnight.....Ismael did the countdown and then all the ballons and confetti fell from the ceiling at 12:00...Happy new year to all from Miranda and Harlow....I rested till 10;30 the following day and just made it to breakfast in time ....I caught some rays till 2pm and then packed up , checked out and waited for Angelo to drive me to San Juan, It was quite difficult to get a flight to NYC on Sat..Luckily I was able to get on AirTower air to Kennedy, which is one hour late with a "ZOO" of tourists and screaming babies.  Next time I'm going start screaming myself and playing my red keyboard to show them who's the real king of noice.    I just wanted to get home .....I spent friday eve at the El San Juan Hotel listening and dancing to Jose Caunedo's charanga in the lobby of the Hotel....I was with Cindy Mercado, Manolin Lecarose, Luis el Calbo, The manager/brother of Marc Anthony, and several great NYC dancers...His charanga is VERY danceable......I stayed at Luis' home till my 1pm flight which arrived in NYC at 5:45 pm...I really needed some time to rest, but. Sofrito opens Monday at NJPAC, The New jersey Performing Arts Center for 9 shows till Jan 10th....Chau everyone and have a healthy and Happy 1999.........harlow
