Harlow Times

Dateline June 3rd, 1998

New York, NY- I recently returned from Medellin Colombia where I have been talking away for 4 days to some of the most informed' Salsa' music collectors in South American those Colombian are very informed it's scary one must stay hot and competitive....I will not mention their names, the project we are working on is an authorized biography of my life. These writers and collectors have written biographies on Bob Marley and Ruben Blades, which  I have read and think are very informative and well written and full of humor and factual information, as well as complete discography's of the artists ........I talked and talked and answered questions till my toungue was on the floor  I brought tons of old photos of all the musicians, friends and family that I could carry , as well as collectors videos and rare audio tapes, thanks to some friends in California.

I have revized the Latin Legends World Tour '98 so that we can get rid of some dead wood and replace some of the musicians who are unable to make our schedule.  Yomo Toro, due to health issues will join the band for the second phase of the tour.  He will be operated on for some minor surgery on his leg and then undergo tests for his gall bladder (stones) and a bleeding ulcer.  Instead I'm bringing another Legend of Salsa El Sr. Jose Fajardo and his magic flute.  He's one of my idols from Cuba. This great flautist contributed mucho to the wondeful charanga sound and stlye of the Golden age of charanga music. So we are going to be doing some real jamming number with him, Don José fired up excited. Also in the house with us will be Reynaldo Jorge, an original Fania All-Star who recorded our new CD along with Willie Alvarez, the young blood of the band.  Reynaldo will replace Danny Rodriguez, who prefers to play with the New Kids on the Block.  He chosed DLG  New   instead of World Travel Salsa Band.   Which brings me to to the last substitute Junior Gonzalez replaces Pete "el Conde" Rodriguez.   Pete is not doing well either so he can't sustain the hardship of travels.  I was thrilled to have this magnificent sonero sing for us. He did a great job on Palo Duro.  Unfortunatly Pete has a bad heart requireing Heart by-pass surgery, and his family would not let
him undertake such a grueling European tour this summer.  That's Okay because I will replace him with Junior Gonzales; the show must go on.  I mean... we did earn several Gold Records together including Hommy.    Lets face it Junior Gonzalez, the vocalist who gave Orchestra Harlow such hits as La Cartera, El Paso de Encarnicion, No Hay Amigo, The Latin Opera Hommy, etc etc etc I am happy to welcome him aboard, and am looking foward to recording a new song with him
on the next Latin Legends CD 1999.   The great news is that Alfredo de la   Fe is going with us,
reunited with his mentor, Jose Fajardo. Alfredo is excited. Guagua is excited, which makes me excited and it all comes out in great Music.... Cachete Maldonado the conga virtuoso, Pablito Rosario on bongo, Nicky Marrero on timbales and Chembo Corniel on the tumbadoras, we should have some great jamms along the way.........We wish to thank L.P. (Latin Percussion), for servicing our percussion needs on our world tourv '98.........Japan is comfirmed and we leave for the far east July 28th arriving in Tokyo for 2 shows and having 2 days off and 2 shows in Osaka. This is the first time the Legends will be playing in large concert venues in the far East, after 3 previous times in Japan at the Blue Note Jazz Clubs.....Ismael, Adalberto, Junior and Emo are the singers for this tour '98......Our tour staff include joey Blue Berrios, our terrific sound engineer, Edgar Rodriguez, our road manager, Pedro Michelena and Ettore Carretta our managment for the European tour '98. My thanke go to the M&I company for taking us to this years Caribbean Carnival in Japan. On the home front , Fania records has been very slow in promoting the Legends Cd. Tony Conga has been working after hours promoting Alex Masicci's Mangu for Polygram and has been neglecting the Legends CD on JMM?SonyDiscos.

The mailer for 500 cd's to non-commercial radio stations and all Latin Magazines and newspapers has NOT been sent yet, although all the things needed are sittimg on the floor of Fania controller Victor Gallo's office for the last 3 weeks.   Constanza Garcia, who was hired to do the the promotion and publicity for the Cd has not had the opportunity to finish her job before startibg to promote the upcoming concert of Ry Cooder... guess the almighty buck speaks pretty loud.  I want to thank all the dj's who are burning the CD right now and to let you all know that a single and video of EL PRIMERO is in the works.  It seems to be a little long for commercial radio but is a great single at 4:15 THE TOUR JACKETS HAVE ARRIVED AND LOOK GREAT. Thank you Hialeah, Florida and Ray Aviles for finding the place to have them made so quickly. to all our fans; I will revise the schedule this week to include all the cities, venues and dates for the summer. We will be at the Copacabana for our going away party along with Tommy Olivencia and his Orquesta. June 12th.  Please everyone come to say goodby hasta la vista baby............Harlow!
