Manuel
Licea Lamot
January 4, 1927 – December 4, 2000
Manuel Licea Lamot, known around the world as “Puntillita” passed away this past Monday in Havana, Cuba. Puntillita came onto the scene as a vocalist with the Julio Cueva Orchestra back in 1945. It was while singing with Cueva’s orchestra that he would be nicknamed “Puntillita”, the name being derived from the song “Son De La Puntillita”.
During the 50’s “Puntillita” would move on and sing with the legendary La Sonora Matancera.
In 1996 the vocalist would be invited by Juan de Marcos Gonzalez to participate in a recording that would bring him, along with many of his contemporaries, out of retirement and onto a worldwide stage. As a result of THE BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB things would never be the same again.
“Puntillita”, along with Ruben Gonzalez, Ibrahim Ferrer, and Omara Portuondo, was fortunate enough to travel the world as a result of the BVSC recordings over the last four years.
In
death he joins his wife of forty-five years, and is survived by his only son.
QEPD.
