Sheri's Story...
I went to the Dominican Republic for a one week vacation,
and I
enjoyed learning to dance merengue with all of the Dominican
guys. Then on the last night of the trip I went to a club that
played salsa and I fell in love with the dance. It looked so
elegant and sexy, but I never had the opportunity to try to
dance that night.
When I got back to Alaska, I met up with an Eskimo, who was
interesting in learning salsa. My country and polka dance
background combined with his igloo style made us an formidable
force on the Alaskan salsa scene. From that point on we won
every salsa dance contest in the state of Alaska.
Although I was the best in Alaska, I thought that there may be
stiffer competition elsewhere (especially since we were the only
competitors in the dance competitions). We decided to venture
into other parts of the USA, we thought Puerto Rico would be a
good place to start, (salsa is probably new to that little island).
So we (me and my partner Matt) entered a contest in Puerto
Rico. When we arrived for the contest, there were several
competitors and spectators. Most of the male competitors wore
zoot suits and shoes with two colors, while the females wore
dresses which allowed their asses to show when they spun, or
dipped or anything for that matter.
I thought that we had gained the edge in the costume
department. My pink prom dress and my partners matching 3
piece suit, we looked sharp baby. The other couples all danced a
similar style and I must admit it looked very smooth. It was
finally our turn and the crowd was there was a hush in the
crowd, finally the music started and we were performing. We
executed our routine flawless. The crowd was in total
silence, I mean no cheers, no hollering, nothing at all. We were a
little confused, but still confident that we had performed well. It
was finally the time for the judges decision, I thought we would
do no worse than 3rd, but we should probably come in first
place. When the judges announced 1st, 2nd and 3rd place our
names were not called. I approached one of the judges
after the contest and asked him why we did not place and what
we could improve on for next time. She replied, "What you just performed was not
salsa it was tap."
So when we got back to Alaska we formed a tap-dance dance
company and toured around the world and lived happily ever
after. My life is wonderful thank you salsa.
